French Rhum (rum) served at a Chinese wedding banquet

RHUM DE FRANCE continues to innovate and introduce refreshing concepts and ideas in China to promote French fine rum. After being the first to introduce rum pairing in Hong Kong with no less than five events hosted since last Spring, we recently announced in a press release that our luxury rhum would be used at a wedding banquet. Here is an extract of the press release:

French Rhum (rum) to debut at a Chinese wedding banquet this week-end in Hong Kong.

The Damoiseau Reserve Speciale (Special Reserve), the flagship product of RHUM DE FRANCE will be served to guests of a Chinese wedding banquet at the Royal Garden Hotel for the first time in Hong Kong.

At a typical Chinese wedding banquet a number of special dishes are served together with a selection of beverages including spirits. Since the 1960s, cognac has been the spirit of choice at Chinese wedding banquets.

Most French rums are made from freshly squeezed sugar cane juice. The resulting product called "Rhum Agricole" (agricultural rum) once aged in oak barrels for a number of years has a definite advantage over other rums (made from molasses or sugar cane syrup).

Unlike other rums, a French fine rum is on par or better than a single malt whiskey or brandy. For trendy couples, luxury French spirit like the Damoiseau oak aged Rhum Agricole is a new and refreshing alternative to cognac.

RHUM DE FRANCE is the leading importer and supplier of French Fine Rums in Greater China.

Damoiseau is the leading rum brand in Guadeloupe and one of the best known French rum makers.

The Damoiseau brand and the Reserve Speciale / V.S.O.P. have received several awards including Best Rum Brand at the Rhum Fair Paris 2013 and the International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal (June, 2013) with a rating of 91/100 points (Exceptional)."

November Rum Tasting and Food Pairing

Part I - Caribbean Rums

No less than seven amber rums were served during a private tasting event held on November 1st in the South side of Hong Kong island for a group of 25 rum lovers.

The rums tasted were as follow:
1. Angostura 1919,  a blend of rums aged for 8 years. Angostura was established in 1830 in Venezuela and moved to Trinidad and Tobago in 1876.

2. Chairman Reserve, a doubled distilled rum using both pot and column aged for 5 years. The rum is produced in St Lucia an island located northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique.

3. Mount Gay XO (Barbados) is a rum aged between 8 and 12. Like the Chairman Reserve, it is also distilled using both pot and column. Mount Gay was established in 1703.

4. The only non-molasses rum of the evening was the (rhum) Damoiseau Speciale Reserve from Guadeloupe.

5. Flor De Cana 18 Years old from Nicaragua. Flor De Cana history goes back to 1890.

6. Pampero Aniversario. A relative young rum since it is only 5 years old. Pampero is made in Venezuela.

7. The last rum of the night was a Demerara rum from Guyana: A 12 years old El Dorado rum.

El Dorado is well know for a complex distillation process  using both column and pot. TheDemerara rum makers have been around since 1670.

The rum was paired with dark chocolate as well as other delicacies like French "saucisson" (salami).

For rums aged over 10 years, the El Dorado easily won over the Flor De Cana. The El Dorado was voted best (English) rum of the night.

The Pampero was the best Spanish ron.

Damoiseau was the best rum under 10 years.

The Chairman Reserve was also mentioned as one the preferred rum.
